Treatment for Lifelong Problems . . .
Many patients who come to our Centers have had a lifelong history of psychological problems.  In our experience, these patients benefit most from an expansion of cognitive therapy developed by Dr. Young, called Schema Therapy.
Schema Therapy was developed specifically for patients with chronic or long-term difficulties.  Some of these problems include feelings of inadequacy, loneliness, strong dependence on others, mistrust, problems choosing appropriate partners, and being out of touch with one's feelings.
In comparison with standard cognitive therapy, schema therapy probes more deeply into the childhood origins of distorted thinking, relies more on imagery and emotion-focused techniques, and is somewhat longer-term.  Cognitive therapy is often combined with schema therapy, when agreed upon jointly by the therapist and patient.
